|Personal History||Born to a Betazoid father and Greek mother, Alex was the eldest child and had a younger sister Arina. Raised on Earth in the city of Athens, his mother was a doctor and his father a diplomat. Whilst his father's job took him away from Earth often, Alex was mainly raised by his mother and maternal grandparents. He embraced his Greek heritage much more than his Betazoid side and found it extremely difficult to come to terms with his empathic abilities without his father around to guide him for the majority of the time. In fact, his abilities served to alienate him from his peers when he was at school, especially as he lacked control over his ability. He used to keep himself to himself with the exception of his relationship with his sister whom he adored and growing up they did everything together.
Opting to follow in his mother's footsteps, he began training to be a doctor at the University of Athens and initially hadn't even contemplated joining Starfleet. That changed when Arina signed up and went to San Francisco to the Academy much to Alex's surprise for she hadn't said a word to him. Missing her greatly, he took the entrance exam and after passing, transferred his training to Starfleet Medical. Reunited with Arina they progressed through the Academy together and whilst Arina struggled, Alex excelled, passing his final exams with distinction.
It was at this point that Alex and Arina parted ways after a lifetime living in each other's pockets. Arina had failed her final exams and had to retake her final year whereas Alex was rather unusually posted on board the USS Hippocrates to complete his postgraduate training where the Chief Medical Officer spotted his talent and helped him to learn his craft. It was during this time that he really learned to embrace his Betazoid side, the Betazoid counsellor on board teaching him how to use his talent and how to not overstep his boundaries. This led to him becoming more comfortable in his own skin and for the first time of his life he grew up and became the man he was meant to be. It was also at that time that he met and fell in love with a nurse on the ship, Neela Baklen. The pair were inseparable and within just a year, were making plans to marry. It was also when Neela discovered she was carrying Alex's child. The pair were over the moon and so it was devastating when Neela discovered that she had Kamarovskaya’s Syndrome, a genetic neurodegenerative illness unique to Betazoid-Vulcan hybrids. All cases of the syndrome are fatal and shortly after learning this, Neela also miscarried their child. Deciding that she would save Alex the pain of watching her waste away, Neela left him, leaving Alex hurt and reeling from both losses in his life. The act was something he never got over and over the next eight years he focused on his work, vowing never to get close again as he left a string of one night stands and short affairs in his wake.
During his time on the USS Hippocrates, Alex had the opportunity to rotate through many specialties during his internship and residency, the CMO was obviously grooming him for a department head role. After just four short years, he was transferred to the USS Sentinel as her Assistant CMO. Showing that he knew his job, when the CMO of the Sentinel retired, Alex was given the job and excelled in the role until he was recommended to take the bridge officer's exam by his Captain. Upon passing this, he was immediately offered the job of executive officer of the USS Nightingale.
